WNBA Star Angel Reese Is Searching For New Nickname
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Now that Angel Reese has transitioned from Baton Rouge to the WNBA, it might be a fitting moment to bid farewell to her Bayou Barbie moniker.

Selected as the No. 7 pick by the Chicago Sky in Monday’s WNBA Draft, Reese is eager to embrace a new nickname that resonates with her new city.

“I need a new name now that I’m in Chicago. Something cute that is catchy like Bayou Barbie.”

However, her social media call for suggestions hasn’t exactly yielded stellar results. Many proposals fall short of capturing her essence.

One popular idea was “Lil Reese,” borrowing from a Chicago-based rapper’s name. Yet, it hardly encapsulates the stature and style of the 6-foot-3 power forward.

While “Sky Reese” is a slight improvement, it still lacks that perfect ring.

Then there are suggestions like “Deep Dish Barbie” or “Deep Dish Diva,” but Reese might want to steer clear of associations with a culinary specialty that some Chicagoans insist qualifies as pizza.

“Southside Barbie” isn’t entirely awful. Yet, sticking with “Barbie” might not feel like much of a departure, and the allure of alliteration that made her LSU nickname charming might not translate as well.

Perhaps the Sky has inadvertently offered a solution with “Chi-Town Barbie.” Sometimes, the simplest choice is the most fitting.

Another option could be to borrow from another notable Chicago basketball figure and adopt the moniker “Air Angel.” However, drawing comparisons to Michael Jordan before her WNBA debut might not be the most prudent move.

The best nicknames tend to emerge organically, so a public appeal may not lead to the ideal outcome. Perhaps Angel Reese should hold onto “Bayou Barbie” until a more suitable alternative arises naturally.
